The inaugural meeting of the Further Education Young Ambassador Programme (FEYA) on 19 April 2021 signalled the launch of a new scheme to empower learners to become peer leaders in active wellbeing.

ColegauCymru and YA Cymru have come together to create the FEYA Programme which is designed to support the work of young ambassadors in the FE sector in Wales, in particular those working in the areas of Active Wellbeing and Sport. The ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing Strategy supports colleges to improve the emotional, social and physical wellbeing within the sector, promoting both healthier college communities and a workforce that is fit for future employment.

ColegauCymru Project Manager for Sport Rob Baynham said,

“This exciting new development will empower peer learning and support as well as improve partnership working. It will allow the sharing of experiences and recognise the role of young people in the sector.”

Colleges across Wales are already carrying out outstanding work with learners who are led and motivated by ambassadors. These same young leaders will now begin to share these experiences and the associated longer-term benefits. The FEYA Programme will support existing ambassador programmes in FE, develop engagement with a wider range of learners and stakeholders whilst creating new activities and opportunities for the concept to grow where not already established.

Youth Sport Trust Development Officer, Aled Davies, added,

“A programme like this has been needed for some time and will provide a great opportunity for young ambassadors to share practical ideas and best practice with peers in other colleges. It will also be a great opportunity for them to develop relationships with key individuals in the sector.”

ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing Strategy Group Chair, Simon Pirotte, further added,

“We’re delighted to support this Programme. It’s important that young people in our colleges are given a voice which will help them to influence key decision makers on important matters. Learners will be placed at the heart of the FEYA Programme and involved in decision-making, communications and future planning.”

The ColegauCymru Active Wellbeing project is funded as part of a national partnership with Sport Wales.
